מוחמד דף, המבוקש מספר 1 בחמאס, שבהוראתו החל סבב הלחימה הנוכחי עם ירי הרקטות לעבר ירושלים בשבוע שעבר, הצליח להתחמק פעמיים מניסיונות חיסול שלו בימים האחרונים – זאת לאחר שישראל ניסתה לחסלו עוד ארבע פעמים באוויר, ללא הצלחה.
ב'חדשות 12' דווח כי באחד מניסיונות החיסול, שהיה השישי במספר, דף הצליח לחמוק מפצצות חיל האוויר ממש בעור שיניו. מהרגע שבו בוצע הירי לעבר בירת ישראל ביום שני שעבר, הוא ירד למחתרת, מסתתר, ועובר בין מקומות מגורים שונים כדי שיהיה קשה להגיע אליו. דף עובר בין משפחות שונות – ומקפיד לא לישון בכל לילה באותה המיטה.

ב'חדשות 13' דווח כי כחלק מהמו"מ להפסקת אש, בחמאס דרשו מישראל להתייחב שלא תנסה לחסל את מוחמד דף ואיסמעיל הנייה, ושלא תעצור יותר פלסטינים בירושלים ובאל-אקצא. המתווכים המצריים הצליחו להוריד את סעיף המעצרים, אולם בעניין החיסולים לא נראה כי הושגה הסכמה, שכן בחמאס עדיין מתעקשים על סעיף זה.
ראש השב"כ לשעבר ח"כ אבי דיכטר אמר בראיון ל'חדשות 12' כי "היו שני פספוסים גדולים בניסיון לתפוס את מוחמד דף. האחד, עוד בינואר 1996, ביום בו חוסל רב המרצחים שכונה 'המהנדס' יחיא עיאש, הייתה הזדמנות יוצאת מן הכלל – דף היה על הכוונת, אך הדרג המדיני לא אישר ברגע האחרון לפגוע בו. התקופה הייתה שלוש שנים אחרי הסכם אוסלו, שנתיים אחרי הקמת הרשות הפלסטינית, הייתה תקווה לשלום – בדיעבד מדובר בטעות חמורה. יכולנו לפגוע בו אז ללא ספק".
"הניסיון השני היה כשהייתי ראש השב"כ. כל צמרת החמאס התכנסה בבניין – באופן שלא קרה לפני ואחרי – בגין היציאה למבצע חומת מגן. הייתה ההחלטה לפגוע בפצצה של טון בבניין, וכל הבכירים הגיעו לפגישה. ברגע האחרון צה"ל תפס רגליים קרות מחשש לפגיעה בחפים מפשע. בסוף – תקפנו רק קומה אחת בתוך המבנה, הם לא היו שם כלל. את מוחמד דף מאז לא הצלחנו לתפוס".
