נשיא ארצות הברית ג'ו ביידן עדיין מחלים מקורונה – והפגישה המתוכננת שלו עם ראש הממשלה בנימין נתניהו, שנחת אמש (שני) בוושינגטון, צפויה כנראה להידחות, ייתכן שליום רביעי.
בסביבת נתניהו אמרו אמש, בעת שהם במטוס כנף ציון בדרך לוושינגטון, כי אין כרגע ודאות לגבי הפגישה שהייתה אמורה להיערך היום עקב מחלת הקורונה של ביידן – ובצוותו מחכים לעדכון שביידן שלילי לקורונה וכבר לא סובל מתסמינים.
ב"פוליטיקו" דווח כי נתניהו ביקש פגישה אישית עם הנשיא לשעבר דונלד טראמפ. כך אמרו לאתר האמריקני שני גורמים המעורים בנושא, ובהמשך לדיווחים ב-ynet על ניסיונו של ראש הממשלה לקבוע פגישה עם המועמד הרפובליקני לנשיאות.
ייתכן שפגישה זו תתקיים באחוזתו במאר א-לאגו שבפלורידה, ביום חמישי. טראמפ עדיין לא הסכים סופית לפגישה שכזו, אבל גורמים המעורים בנושא אמרו שגם לא דחה את הרעיון. אם אכן נתניהו ייפגש עם טראמפ ביום חמישי, הוא ישוב ארצה ביום שישי בצהריים.
נתניהו צפוי להיפגש עם סגניתו של ביידן, קמלה האריס, פגישה שכעת חשיבותה עולה בהרבה – על רקע ההערכה שהיא זו שתתמודד מול טראמפ על המרוץ לנשיאות. עוזרה של האריס הודיע הלילה כי השניים יפגשו השבוע בבית הלבן.
ביום רביעי ינאם נתניהו מול שני בתי הקונגרס – הסנאטור בן קרדין, המכהן כיו"ר ועדת החוץ של הסנאט ינהל את הישיבה בזמן נאומו של רה"מ. כך אמר עוזרו. האריס עצמה דחתה את האפשרות כבר בשבוע שעבר והסנאטורית פטי מארי דחתה את הרעיון למחרת.
בנוסף, משפחות החטופים האמריקנים נפגשו הלילה עם היועץ לביטחון לאומי בבית הלבן ג'ייק סאליבן ושמעו עדכון על המגעים לעסקה. סאליבן הקרין אופטימיות באשר למגעים, והמשפחות התרשמו דווקא שפרישתו של ביידן מהמרוץ לנשיאות מגבירה את המעורבות האמריקנית. "ביידן יותר משוחרר מהמחויבויות האחרות להתמקד בעסקה שתהיה חלק מהמורשת שלו", אמר רובי חן, אביו של החטוף איתי חן, שהשתתף בפגישה.
הלילה, במסר ראשון בקולו מאז שהודיע על החלטתו לפרוש מהמרוץ, אמר ביידן: "נמשיך לעבוד קשה מאוד כדי לסיים את המלחמה בעזה. אעבוד עם הישראלים והפלסטינים להשיב את כל החטופים הביתה. אני חושב שאנחנו קרובים לעשות את זה".
רגעים לפני עלייתו למטוס אמר היום נתניהו כי ישראל היא "בעלת ברית שאין לה תחליף". הוא מסר כי "אני יוצא עכשיו לביקור חשוב ביותר בארה"ב, בזמן שישראל נלחמת בשבע חזיתות ובזמן של אי-ודאות פוליטית גדולה בוושינגטון. בביקור הזה אנאם בפעם הרביעית בפני שני בתי הקונגרס בתור ראש ממשלת ישראל. בנאומי אדגיש את התמיכה הדו-מפלגתית ואומר להם שבלי קשר למי ייבחר להנהיג את העם האמריקני אחרי הבחירות לנשיאות, ישראל היא בעלת בריתו החשובה ביותר במזרח התיכון".
